Help › Moving to a new device
GuideMoving to a new device
Two routes, and both work between a phone and a browser in either direction. Do it before you wipe the old device, not after.
Route one: a backup file
Works with no connection, and moves everything in one file.
- On the old device: Settings → Backup and export → Save a backup file.
- Get the file to the new device — email it to yourself, a cloud drive, a cable, a USB stick.
- On the new device: Settings → Backup and export → Restore from a file.
Everything comes across: clients, documents, payments, tax rates, payment methods, saved items, repeating schedules, history and — the important one — your document counters, so the next invoice carries on from the right number instead of restarting at one.
Route two: just sign in
Needs a connection on both ends, and nothing else.
- On the old device: open the app and let it settle. It sends changes up a second or two after you make them, so this is usually already done.
- On the new device: sign in with the same account.
That is the whole procedure. The new device fetches before it shows you anything, so it opens on your real books rather than on an empty set — and from then on the two stay in step in both directions without being asked.
It merges, it does not replace
Anything you had already written on the new device is kept. The two sets are brought together rather than one being written over the other, which is safe because an issued invoice is frozen, payments are separate rows, and nothing is ever erased — only marked deleted, so a deletion is a fact that travels rather than an absence that gets undone.
Common situations
New phone, old phone still working
Sign in on the new one. Open the old one first if it has been shut for a while, and give it a moment to catch up.
Old device already gone
Sign in on the new one with the same account and your records are fetched. What cannot be recovered is a device that was never signed in — and that is the reason to keep a backup file as well, which is free on every tier.
Switching browsers, or to a different computer
Same as a new device. Records live per browser, so Chrome and Firefox on the same machine each hold their own — signing in on the new one brings them across.
Adding a second device rather than replacing one
Sign in on both and use both. Write on either — what you do on one is on the other within seconds, and invoice numbers are claimed against your account, so the two cannot take the same number even if you both press finish at once.
Browser to phone, when the Android app arrives
Either route works — the backup file format and the cloud format are the same on both sides, by design.
Afterwards, check three things
- The next invoice number is what you expect. Start a new invoice, look, and cancel out of it.
- Your logo appears on a document.
- A finished invoice still shows its payment link and its QR.
